About Us

What is TEDxVancouverCollege?

TEDxVancouverCollege is a not-for-profit conference at which a suite of educational and inspirational short talks is shared with onsite and online audiences. Our conference takes place on Wednesday, March 7th, 2018 from 3:30pm to 7pm at the Kucher Performing Arts Centre located on campus at Vancouver College. This year, 7 young men and women will showcase the endeavours that they have undertaken in hopes of sparking a flame in others to discover and pursue their own endeavours.

Our Name

The ‘TEDxVancouverCollege’ name is inspired by - Vancouver College - a kindergarten through grade 12 independent Catholic school for boys. The name is chosen because the faith and learning community at Vancouver College is called upon by the Essential Elements of Blessed Edmund Rice (the founder of the school) to: “Pursue Excellence in all its Endeavours.” Vancouver College is NOT a college institution, but rather it is a private school for K-12 students.

Our Vision

An endeavour is the strive to fulfillment of a passion. It is the driving force behind any pursuit if a big idea or project, which is what we want to spread at TEDxVancouverCollege. The speakers do not crave for recognition, fame, or notoriety, but rather, they look to spark discussion and deep consideration about their topics. We want passion, courage, fury, dedication, and perseverance to be the main message the audience receives after our conference. Our goal is to create a platform for the community to witness, appreciate, and discuss the endeavors of their peers, in hopes of inspiring passion and the pursuit of ideas in the audience.

Our Theme

Our perennial theme is as simple as is complex. Endeavour: Grammar is important. To endeavour - a verb that means to try very hard.

But turn it into a noun; an endeavour, something you undertake with passion. It conjures up images of industriously and furiously giving a new project all you've got to make it work. It's our reason for being. The manifestation of listening to our heart's insistence on being heard. In the end it's not the ultimate success of the project, although that's always good too; it's the willingness to take a risk. An acceptance that you might fail and doing it anyway because you might succeed. And the knowledge that success and failure are both our teachers.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
